Hearts of Darkness: Theory and Phenomenology of quantum gravity regularised black holes

Black holes are the purest expression of gravity and at the same time the places where our best theory of gravitation, Einstein’s General Relativity, meets its demise in the form of singularities. We expect that any successful theory of quantum gravity should however be able to regularise these uncharted regions leaving an interior that can be modelled via a smooth spacetime. The question is then if this can be done without any modification showing outside the trapping horizon of these objects.
